Every RAM 1500 comes from the factory with gear ratios optimized for its stock tire size. When you increase tire diameter, you change the effective final drive ratio — the mathematical relationship between engine RPMs and wheel speed. Bigger tires mean the engine has to work harder per revolution. Re-gearing installs new ring and pinion gear sets that restore that relationship, putting your HEMI’s torque back where you can use it.

Gear Ratio Recommendations for the RAM 1500

Matching the right gear ratio to your tire size is critical. Too tall and your truck still feels lazy. Too short and you’re over-revving on the highway. Here’s what we’ve proven works on the RAM 1500 platform:

33-inch tires → 4.56 gear ratio: The conservative, smart choice for a leveled RAM on 33s (like the popular 285/70R17). A 4.56 ratio on 33-inch tires gives you back the acceleration you lost and actually improves towing performance over factory 3.21 or 3.55 gears. Most customers report that their RAM feels quicker off the line than stock after this regear.

35-inch tires → 4.88 gear ratio: This is the combination we install more than any other on RAM 1500s. The 5.7L HEMI paired with 4.88 gears and 35-inch tires is a sweet, sweet spot — responsive off the line, comfortable highway cruising RPMs (right around 2,000 at 70 mph), and genuine off-road pulling power. 37-inch tires → 5.13 gear ratio: For full-size builds on 37s, the 5.13 ratio brings your RPMs back to the comfortable range. At this level, your RAM is a purpose-built rig — the 5.13s give you the low-range crawling torque for rocks and sand while keeping highway speeds manageable. This is the minimum ratio we recommend for 37-inch tires on a HEMI-powered RAM.

RAM 1500 Differential Specifications

Rear Axle — AAM 9.25-Inch (4th Gen / Classic): The American Axle Manufacturing 9.25-inch rear end used in 2009-2018 RAM 1500s (and the continuing Classic) is a strong, proven housing. It uses a 12-bolt cover and accepts Yukon and Nitro ring and pinion sets in all common ratios. If your RAM has the factory limited-slip differential, we preserve it during the regear.

Rear Axle — AAM 11.5-Inch (some 4th Gen HD packages) / 9.25-Inch (5th Gen): The current-generation RAM 1500 DT continues with an AAM 9.25-inch rear. Some heavy-duty packages ran the larger 11.5. We carry gear sets for both housings. The 5th-gen DT rear is similar to the 4th-gen but has updated carrier bearing dimensions — make sure your parts source knows which generation you have.

Front Axle — AAM 9.25-Inch IFS: The RAM 1500’s front differential also uses an AAM 9.25-inch housing, but configured for the IFS setup. This front end MUST be re-geared to match the rear — mismatched ratios cause binding, vibration, and transfer case damage whenever you engage 4WD. We always regear both axles together.

Our Re-Gearing Process

Re-gearing is the most precision-dependent work we do. Ring and pinion gears are machined in matched pairs — the contact pattern between the ring gear and pinion must be set within thousandths of an inch. Here’s how we approach every RAM 1500 regear:

Tear-down and inspection: Both differentials come apart completely. We inspect carrier bearings, pinion bearings, and housing surfaces for wear, pitting, or damage. Worn bearings get replaced — installing new gears on tired bearings is a recipe for noise and premature failure.

Precision gear setup: New ring and pinion gears are installed with backlash set to manufacturer specifications (typically 0.006-0.010 inches). We verify contact patterns using marking compound on every build — a correct pattern shows centered contact with slight toe bias. This step takes time, and we don’t rush it. A gear set up poorly will whine, and once it’s seated wrong, the damage is done.

New bearings, seals, and hardware: Every regear includes new carrier bearings, pinion bearings, pinion seal, cover gasket, and fresh gear oil. We use Royal Purple Max Gear synthetic diff fluid for superior protection during break-in and long-term operation.

Break-in test drive: After assembly, your RAM goes on a varied-speed test drive. We listen for noise, check operating temperatures, and verify smooth engagement in 2WD and 4WD. You’ll receive break-in instructions — 500 miles of easy driving with no heavy towing and varied speeds to properly seat the new gear teeth.
