Factory headlights on the RAM 1500 range from adequate (the halogen projectors on base models) to genuinely good (the full-LED units on Laramie and Limited trims). But even the best factory lights aren’t designed for pre-dawn ranch roads, unlit backwoods trails, or the kind of all-encompassing illumination you need when you’re running through the palmetto scrub at night with nothing but your lights between you and a washed-out rut. That’s where aftermarket lighting earns its place on your build.

LED Light Bars

Rigid Industries Adapt: Rigid’s adaptive technology automatically shifts beam patterns based on speed and steering input — wide spread at low speeds for trail visibility, focused throw at higher speeds for distance. It’s the most technologically advanced light bar available and it’s particularly well-suited for RAM 1500s that split time between different driving environments. The Rigid Radiance series is a more affordable alternative with Rigid’s signature backlit housing.
Heretic Studio 6 Series: A newer brand that’s earned a loyal following with exceptional build quality and output. Heretic’s 6 Series bars feature individually replaceable LED modules — if one module fails years down the road, you replace the module, not the entire bar. Smart engineering for a long-term investment.
Auxiliary Pod Lights
Pod lights give you precision control over where you put light. Mount them on your A-pillars for ditch lighting, in your bumper corners for trail use, on your roof rack for camp lighting, or on your bed rails for loading and unloading in the dark.
Baja Designs Squadron Pro: The standard for auxiliary pods. 4,900 lumens from a 3-inch housing available in driving, spot, flood, and wide cornering patterns. We typically install driving beams in the bumper and wide cornering beams on the A-pillars as ditch lights — this combination fills every blind spot around your RAM and gives you obstacle awareness that factory lights simply cannot provide.
Rigid D-Series (Dually): 2,880 lumens per pod in a compact housing that fits virtually anywhere. Available in flush-mount (for integration into bumpers and panels) and surface-mount configurations. Most aftermarket bumpers come with pre-cut D-Series provisions, making these a natural pairing with a bumper upgrade.
Diode Dynamics SS3: Outstanding value. The SS3 Max delivers 5,040 lumens per pod with multiple beam patterns and color options including selective yellow — excellent for cutting through Florida’s rain and fog. The SS3 Sport at 1,680 lumens per pod is a smart budget option for ditch lights where you don’t need maximum output.
Headlight Upgrades
If your RAM 1500 has factory halogen headlights (common on Tradesman, Big Horn, and base Laramie trims), upgrading to LED projector assemblies is one of the best quality-of-life improvements you can make on your truck. The difference in nighttime visibility is dramatic — and safer.
Morimoto XB LED Headlights: Our top recommendation for RAM 1500 headlight replacements. Morimoto’s projector-style LED modules produce a sharp, well-defined beam pattern with excellent cutoff — meaning you get more light on the road without blinding oncoming traffic. They include integrated LED DRLs and sequential amber turn signals that give your RAM a modern, premium look. Available for 4th-gen (2009-2018), Classic, and 5th-gen (2019+) platforms. Fully DOT compliant.
AlphaRex NOVA Series: Another excellent option with a distinctive style. AlphaRex uses a dual-projector setup that puts out a wide, well-defined beam. Their programmable DRL and sequential turn signal animations let you customize the look. Particularly popular on the 4th-gen RAM 1500 where the factory headlight design is starting to look dated.
For RAM 1500s that already have factory LED headlights (higher-trim 2019+ models), the factory units are quite good. We typically recommend focusing your lighting investment on auxiliary lights rather than replacing already-capable factory LEDs.
Fog Lights and Ditch Lights
Factory fog lights on the RAM 1500 are underwhelming — small halogen bulbs in a housing designed more for aesthetics than output. Upgrading to LED fog pods from Baja Designs or Diode Dynamics in your factory fog light housing (or in aftermarket brackets if you’ve replaced your bumper) provides dramatically better low-and-wide illumination for rain, fog, and slow-speed trail navigation.
Ditch lights mount on A-pillar brackets and point forward and slightly outward, illuminating the area immediately beside your hood and in front of your fenders. This is the most underrated lighting upgrade for off-road use — ditch lights show you trail edges, rocks, and drop-offs that headlights and light bars miss because they’re pointing straight ahead. We install ditch light brackets from Cali Raised and Baja Designs that bolt to factory A-pillar mounting points with no drilling.
Wiring, Switching, and Integration
Clean wiring is the foundation of a reliable lighting system. We use the sPOD BantamX power distribution system for multi-light builds — it’s a Bluetooth-controlled module that replaces individual relays and toggle switches with a clean, app-controlled interface. Each circuit is individually fused and monitored, and you can program on/off combinations for different scenarios (trail mode, camp mode, highway mode).
For simpler installations, we wire through automotive-grade relay harnesses with weatherproof rocker switches mounted in clean, factory-looking locations. Every connection is soldered and sealed with adhesive-lined heat shrink — no crimp connectors, no bare wires, no electrical tape anywhere in the system.
Lighting is one of the most popular additions to a complete RAM 1500 build — and it’s most efficient to install lighting during a bumper installation when the front end is already apart and the wiring paths are accessible.
