The Transfer Case
The transfer case is the heart of your 4WD system, splitting power from the transmission to both the front and rear driveshafts. Most trucks and Jeeps use a part-time transfer case with 2H (two-wheel-drive high range), 4H (four-wheel-drive high range), and 4L (four-wheel-drive low range). 4L provides a gear reduction (typically 2.72:1) that multiplies torque for crawling over obstacles, descending steep grades, and managing slippery surfaces at low speeds. Full-time systems (found in some Toyota and Jeep applications) allow 4WD on all surfaces including dry pavement through a center differential.
Driveshafts and U-Joints
Driveshafts transmit power from the transfer case to the differentials. When you lift your vehicle, driveshaft angles change — and if the angle exceeds the U-joint’s operating range, vibration and premature U-joint failure result. Quality lift kits include geometry correction to address this. For lifts exceeding 3-4 inches on some platforms, a rear driveshaft with a CV (constant velocity) joint or double-cardan joint may be necessary to operate at the steeper angles.
Differentials
Differentials allow the left and right wheels to rotate at different speeds during turns. Open differentials (standard on most trucks) send power to the wheel with the least traction — which is a problem off-road when one wheel is in the air or on a slick surface.
Locking Differentials and Limited Slip
Differential lockers and limited-slip differentials address the open differential’s weakness. A locker physically locks both axle shafts together, forcing both wheels to rotate at the same speed regardless of traction. Lockers provide maximum off-road traction but should be disengaged on pavement. A limited-slip differential (LSD) allows some speed difference between wheels while still distributing torque to both — a compromise that provides better traction than an open diff with more pavement-friendly behavior than a locker. Many Jeep Rubicon models come with factory lockers. Aftermarket lockers and LSDs are available for most platforms.
Axle Shafts
Axle shafts transmit power from the differential to the wheels. Factory axle shafts are designed for factory tire sizes and loads — when you significantly increase tire size, you increase the torque load on the axle shafts. For aggressive builds (37+ inch tires, locker, aggressive trail use), upgraded axle shafts from brands like RCV Performance or Yukon provide additional strength to prevent breakage.
