If you’ve installed larger tires on your truck or Jeep and noticed that it doesn’t drive like it used to — sluggish acceleration, the transmission constantly hunting for gears, poor fuel economy, and a general feeling that the engine is working too hard — you need to regear. Your vehicle’s differential gear ratio (expressed as a number like 3.73, 4.10, or 4.56) represents the number of times the driveshaft rotates for each wheel revolution. A higher numerical ratio means more driveshaft rotations per wheel turn — this translates to more torque multiplication at the wheels but higher engine RPMs at highway speed. Your factory gear ratio was specifically selected by the vehicle manufacturer to balance acceleration, towing capability, and fuel economy with the factory tire size. When you install larger tires, you effectively lower the final drive ratio because each wheel revolution covers more ground. The engine turns the same speed but the vehicle moves further — and the result is a vehicle that feels underpowered and drives poorly.

How to Calculate the Right Gear Ratio

The goal of regearing is to restore the effective drive ratio your vehicle had with factory tires. The formula is straightforward: New Ratio = (New Tire Diameter ÷ Original Tire Diameter) × Original Gear Ratio. For example, if you have a Jeep Wrangler JL with factory 3.45 gears and 31-inch tires, and you install 35-inch tires: (35 ÷ 31) × 3.45 = 3.89. This tells you that 3.90 or higher gears would restore factory-equivalent performance. In practice, most Jeep JL owners with 35s choose 4.56 gears, which provides slightly better-than-stock performance to account for the added weight of larger tires.

Common Gear Ratio Recommendations

While every vehicle is different, these are common starting points for popular tire sizes. For 33-inch tires, 4.10 or 4.30 gears work well on most platforms. For 35-inch tires, 4.56 is the most popular choice for automatic transmissions, with 4.88 preferred for manual transmissions and heavier vehicles. For 37-inch tires, 4.88 or 5.13 gears are typically recommended. For 40+ inch tires, 5.13 or 5.38 gears are necessary. The Regearing Process

Regearing is precision work that requires specialized tools and experience. The process involves removing the differential covers, removing the old ring and pinion gear sets, pressing old bearings off and new bearings on, installing the new pinion gear with correct bearing preload, installing the new ring gear on the carrier, setting backlash (the clearance between ring and pinion teeth), and verifying the gear mesh pattern using marking compound. The mesh pattern is the definitive test — it shows exactly how the gear teeth are contacting each other and must fall within a specific zone on the tooth face. Incorrect patterns lead to noise, heat, and premature failure.

Setting up ring and pinion gears requires precision to within thousandths of an inch — bearing preload, backlash, and gear depth all interact, and getting one wrong throws off the others. How do I know what gear ratio I have now?

Check your vehicle’s door jamb sticker (axle code), owner’s manual, or the differential cover tag. Alternatively, you can count driveshaft rotations per wheel rotation: raise one axle, rotate the tire one full turn, and count driveshaft rotations — that number is your gear ratio. Can I regear just the rear differential?

No. Both the front and rear differentials must have matching gear ratios for the 4WD system to function properly. Mismatched ratios cause the transfer case to bind when 4WD is engaged, potentially damaging expensive components.

Properly installed gears last the life of the axle — typically well over 100,000 miles. Quality gear sets, correct bearing preload, proper backlash, and good mesh patterns are the keys to longevity. Poor installation is the primary cause of premature gear failure.

Does regearing affect my speedometer?

Regearing itself does not affect your speedometer — only tire size changes affect speedometer accuracy.
