Physics is unforgiving. The Gladiator’s 3.6L Pentastar V6 makes 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque — adequate numbers for a vehicle in the 4,600 to 5,100-pound range with factory tires. But a lifted Gladiator with 35-inch tires, a steel bumper, a winch, and 300 pounds of gear in the bed can weigh 6,000+ pounds. At that weight, with the effective gear ratio reduced by taller tires, the engine is perpetually working in an unfavorable RPM range.

Regearing restores the mechanical advantage by installing a numerically higher gear set in both axles. The engine spins in its power band again, the transmission finds clean shift points, acceleration feels responsive, and fuel economy improves because the engine isn’t lugging under constant load.

Gear Ratios for the Gladiator

33-Inch Tires → 4.56 Gears: If you’re running 33s on a Gladiator with the stock 3.73 gears, 4.56 restores factory-like performance. This is particularly beneficial for Gladiator Sport and Overland models that came with 3.45 gears from the factory — even 33-inch tires feel undergeared with 3.45 ratios.

35-Inch Tires → 4.88 Gears: The most common Gladiator regear we do. Thirty-fives are the sweet spot for lifted Gladiators, and 4.88 gears give the 3.6L the mechanical advantage it needs to turn them confidently, whether merging onto the highway or crawling through Florida sand. Highway RPMs stay in the 2,200-2,400 range at 70 mph on the 8-speed automatic, which is right in the engine’s efficiency sweet spot.

37-Inch Tires → 5.13 Gears: When you’re running 37s on a Gladiator, the weight and rolling resistance demand serious gearing. 5.13 is our standard recommendation. Some owners with heavy builds (steel bumpers front and rear, winch, full armor, rooftop tent) find that 5.38 is even better, particularly if they tow or carry heavy bed loads regularly.

JT-Specific Driveshaft Considerations

This is where Gladiator regearing differs from Wrangler regearing. The regear itself is mechanically identical — same ring and pinion setup, same bearing preload process, same contact pattern verification. But the Gladiator’s longer rear driveshaft and two-piece design mean that pinion angle changes during a regear can affect driveline vibration more noticeably.

When we install new ring and pinion gears, the pinion position changes slightly — different gear ratios have different pinion depths. On a Wrangler, the shorter driveshaft is more tolerant of these small changes. On the Gladiator, the longer driveshaft amplifies them. Both axles get fresh gear oil — we use Royal Purple Max-Gear or equivalent synthetic. The vehicle gets an extended test drive to verify smooth, quiet operation across the RPM range.

Lockers and Limited-Slip Differentials
