At Godspeed Off-Road, 6-inch builds are our most complex and rewarding projects. Every one is a full custom build that touches every major system in the vehicle. These aren’t weekend projects — they’re engineering exercises that result in machines capable of things stock vehicles can only dream of.
What a 6-Inch Lift Makes Possible
Tire Fitment
A 6-inch lift opens the door to serious rubber:
- 37-inch tires: Fits with generous clearance and no fender modifications needed. This is arguably the ideal tire size for a 6-inch lift — big enough to justify the lift height, manageable enough for regular driving.
- 40-inch tires: Possible on most platforms with appropriate wheel offset and minor trimming. This is where 5.38 gears become necessary.
- 42-inch+ tires: Competition territory. Requires significant body and fender work plus full axle upgrades.
Ground Clearance
With 37-inch tires, a 6-inch lift provides approximately 9–10 inches more ground clearance than a stock vehicle. Combined with improved approach, departure, and breakover angles, you can navigate terrain that stops nearly every other vehicle on the trail.

Combined with 37-inch or 40-inch tires, bumpers, lighting, and the right wheel choice, these builds are rolling works of art. Complete Drivetrain Work Required
At 6 inches, there’s no such thing as a partial build. Every drivetrain component needs attention:
Regearing — Required
With 37-inch tires: 5.13 gears for daily-driven builds, 5.38 gears for trail-focused rigs. With 40-inch tires: 5.38 gears minimum. See our gear ratio comparison chart for complete RPM data.
Driveshafts — Required
Both front and rear driveshafts must be replaced with aftermarket units designed for the extreme operating angles of a 6-inch lift. CV-style or double-cardan driveshafts are standard. Factory driveshafts will vibrate, bind, and eventually fail at this height. Budget for quality shafts from Tom Wood’s, Adams, or JE Reel — this isn’t the place to save money.
Axle Shaft Upgrades — Required
Chromoly axle shafts for both front and rear axles are mandatory at this build level. The combination of aggressive gearing, large tires, and the torque loads generated during off-road use exceeds what factory shafts can reliably handle. On Dana 30 front axles, a complete axle swap to Dana 44 or stronger is the smart path — upgrading shafts in a Dana 30 at this level is putting a band-aid on a structural limitation.
Steering Upgrades — Required
The weight of 37-inch or larger tires overwhelms factory steering components. At 6 inches, you need:
- Heavy-duty tie rod and drag link (or a high-steer kit)
- Upgraded steering stabilizer (dual stabilizer setups are common)
- Heavy-duty track bar with proper geometry
- Potentially hydraulic assist steering for 40-inch+ tire builds
Without these upgrades, death wobble, vague steering, and component failure are predictable outcomes — not possibilities.
Brake Upgrades — Strongly Recommended
Stopping 37 or 40-inch tires from highway speed generates significantly more heat and requires more braking force than stock components can consistently deliver. Slotted or drilled rotors, upgraded pads, and in some cases big-brake kits are worth the investment. This is a safety consideration, not a performance luxury.
Control Arms
Adjustable long-arm kits are the gold standard for 6-inch lifts. Long-arm setups relocate the lower control arm mounts to maintain proper geometry at extreme lift heights, resulting in better ride quality, more articulation, and correct caster and pinion angles. Short-arm kits can work at 6 inches but with compromised geometry and ride quality.
The Build Process
A 6-inch build at Godspeed Off-Road is a multi-day project that we plan meticulously:
Phase 1 — Planning: We assess your vehicle, discuss your goals and budget, and spec every component. Nothing is ordered until the complete build plan is reviewed and approved. This prevents surprises and ensures every part works together.
Phase 2 — Disassembly and inspection: We strip the suspension, remove driveshafts, open the differentials, and inspect everything. Any worn or damaged components are identified before new parts go on. Building on top of worn components is a recipe for problems.
Phase 3 — Assembly: Lift kit installation, regear, driveshafts, axle shafts, steering, brakes, bump stops, brake lines — everything goes on in the right order with proper torque specs and measurements.
Phase 4 — Alignment and testing: Professional alignment, road test for vibrations and noises, and adjustment of any components that need fine-tuning. We don’t release a vehicle until it drives right.
Investment Reality
A complete 6-inch build is a significant investment in your vehicle. The lift kit itself is the starting point — add regearing, driveshafts, axle shafts, steering upgrades, tires, wheels, and potentially brakes and armor. We provide itemized estimates so you can see exactly where every dollar goes, and we can stage the build over multiple phases if needed.
The most important advice we give 6-inch build customers: don’t cut corners. Every component in a 6-inch build is under more stress than it would be at lower lift heights. A cheap steering stabilizer, bargain driveshaft, or stock axle shafts become failure points that can cost more to fix than the proper component would have cost to install initially. Build it right once.
Daily Driving a 6-Inch Lift
It’s possible — many of our customers daily-drive 6-inch lifted rigs — but the trade-offs are real:
- Fuel economy: 12–15 MPG highway with proper gearing. This is a gas-station-friendly vehicle in spirit only.
- Wind: The tall, wide profile catches significant wind. Crosswinds on bridges and open highways require active driving.
- Parking: Many garages are off-limits. Drive-throughs are questionable. You’ll learn your clearances quickly.
- Ride quality: Depends entirely on kit quality. Premium long-arm kits with remote reservoir shocks ride surprisingly well. Budget short-arm kits ride like a covered wagon.
- Attention: Expect questions at every gas station, parking lot, and red light. If you’re not a “car talk” person, this might be the biggest lifestyle change.

In Florida, yes — there are no lift height restrictions for personal vehicles. Other states vary, with some limiting bumper height or requiring mud flaps. Check your local regulations if you’re outside Florida, especially for states like California that have specific bumper height laws.
What tire size should I run on a 6-inch lift?
37-inch tires are the most popular choice for 6-inch lifts — they fill the wheel wells properly and justify the lift height. 40-inch tires are common on dedicated off-road builds. Running 35-inch tires on a 6-inch lift is possible but looks visually underscaled — the wheel wells will have excessive gap.
Do I need a long-arm kit for a 6-inch lift?
Not technically required, but strongly recommended. Long-arm kits maintain proper control arm geometry at 6 inches, which translates to better ride quality, improved articulation, and correct steering angles. Short-arm kits work but compromise these areas.
