If there’s a single tire size that defines the modern lifted truck and Jeep scene, it’s 35 inches. It’s the size that gives your rig a commanding presence on the road, genuine off-road capability, and that unmistakable built-not-bought look. What You Need to Run 35-Inch Tires
Going to 35s is a commitment. Unlike 33-inch tires, which are nearly bolt-on, 35s require supporting modifications to work properly. Here’s what the build looks like:
Lift Height
You need a minimum 3.5-inch lift for 35-inch tires on most vehicles. Some vehicles can squeeze 35s under a 2.5-inch lift with aggressive wheel offset and fender trimming, but we don’t recommend it — the rubbing at full lock and over bumps makes it impractical for daily use.
- Jeep Wrangler JK/JL: 3.5 inches is the standard. Some flat-fender setups allow less.
- Jeep Gladiator: 3.5 inches minimum, with the right wheel offset.
- Toyota Tacoma / 4Runner: 3.5 inches plus potential body mount chop or cab mount relocation (Tacoma). 4Runner is more forgiving.
- Ford Bronco: The Sasquatch package runs 35s on factory suspension. Aftermarket builds need a 2.5–3.5-inch lift.
- Full-size trucks: 3.5 to 4 inches depending on cab style and bed length.
Regearing — Non-Negotiable
With 35-inch tires, you must regear. This isn’t optional. Running 35s on factory 3.73 or 4.10 gears will result in sluggish acceleration, constant transmission hunting, poor fuel economy, and excessive transmission heat. The regear should be done at the same time as the tire install, or as soon after as possible. Every mile driven on mismatched gears is hard on your transmission.
Axle Shaft Considerations
The increased size and weight of 35-inch tires puts more stress on your axle shafts, particularly the front axle on 4WD vehicles. On Jeep JK Wranglers with Dana 30 front axles, we strongly recommend upgrading to chromoly aftermarket shafts when installing 35s. The factory shafts are adequate for stock tires but become the weak link with 35s — and a broken front axle shaft on the highway or trail is both dangerous and expensive.
Dana 44 axles (JL, Gladiator, Rubicon JK) handle 35s on factory shafts for street and moderate trail use. For aggressive off-roading, chromoly shafts are still a smart insurance policy.
Driveshaft
With a 3.5-inch lift, your factory rear driveshaft may develop vibrations due to increased operating angle. Most 35-inch builds benefit from an aftermarket rear driveshaft with a CV or double-cardan joint. The front driveshaft on Wranglers is a CV design from the factory and typically handles 3.5 inches without issue.
Best 35-Inch Tire Brands and Models
All-terrain favorites:
- BFGoodrich KO2 (315/70R17 or 35×12.50R17): The gold standard. Excellent tread life, predictable handling, proven durability. If you’re unsure, this is the safe choice.
- Falken Wildpeak AT3W: Exceptional wet-weather performance. Slightly softer ride than the KO2. Outstanding value for a premium all-terrain.
- Nitto Ridge Grappler: Hybrid all-terrain/mud-terrain with aggressive looks and surprisingly quiet highway manners. Very popular in Florida.
Mud-terrain favorites:
- BFGoodrich KM3: Modern mud-terrain engineering — excellent off-road traction with a civilized highway ride. Self-cleaning tread design works well in Florida sand and mud.
- Toyo Open Country MT: Aggressive tread with strong sidewall protection. Popular for rock-focused builds.
35-Inch Tires: The Performance Reality
Ground clearance: Going from stock 31–32-inch tires to 35s adds approximately 1.5–2 inches of ground clearance at the axle. Combined with a 3.5-inch lift, your approach, departure, and breakover angles improve significantly.
Fuel economy: With proper 4.88 gearing, expect 15–18 MPG highway on a Wrangler, 14–17 on a full-size truck. Without the regear, fuel economy drops further because the transmission compensates for the mismatch by downshifting constantly.
Acceleration: With 4.88 gears, acceleration feels close to stock — maybe 5–10% slower in real-world terms, but strong and predictable. Without the regear, acceleration is noticeably sluggish and the vehicle feels underpowered.
Braking: Larger, heavier tires increase braking distance by 10–15%. This is physics — more mass to stop. It’s manageable with factory brakes but worth keeping in mind, especially in traffic. Upgraded brakes are a smart addition for heavy 35-inch builds.
Common 35-Inch Tire Sizes Decoded
- 315/70R17: 34.4″ actual diameter — the most popular “35” size. Fits the widest range of wheels and lifts.
- 35×12.50R17: 35.0″ actual diameter with a 12.5″ tread width. True 35-inch measurement in the traditional sizing system.
- 35×12.50R15: Same diameter on a 15-inch wheel — more sidewall, great for off-road flex, fewer wheel options.
- 295/70R18: 34.3″ actual diameter on an 18-inch wheel. Less sidewall, more road feel, popular on trucks with 18-inch wheels.
35 vs. 37-Inch Tires
The jump from 35 to 37-inch tires is bigger than it looks on paper. It requires a 4-inch+ lift, 5.13 gears, aftermarket axle shafts, and potentially new driveshafts. For most drivers, 35s are the right balance of capability and livability. Go to 37s when you need dedicated trail capability and are willing to accept the daily-driving trade-offs.
