KDSS-Equipped 4Runners: Special Considerations
If your 4Runner has Toyota’s Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS), your lift kit selection requires extra attention. KDSS uses hydraulically connected sway bars that improve both on-road handling and off-road articulation — it’s a brilliant system, but it limits which lift kits are compatible.
Not every aftermarket lift works with KDSS. Some kits require KDSS skid plate modifications, bracket relocation, or specific spacer configurations. We’ve installed lifts on dozens of KDSS-equipped 4Runners and know exactly which kits work, which require modification, and which to avoid entirely. If another shop told you a lift won’t work with your KDSS system, get a second opinion from us — there are excellent options available.

3-inch lift: Opens up room for 285/75R17 or even 34-inch tires. Requires upper control arm upgrades to maintain proper geometry. Noticeably more trail-capable while still being a great daily driver.
3.5+ inch lift: Serious build territory. Requires upper control arms, potentially extended brake lines, and careful attention to CV axle angles. Best for dedicated off-road or overlanding builds. This is where Icon’s extended-travel kits really shine.

Can I lift my KDSS-equipped 4Runner?
Yes. Several high-quality lift kits are compatible with KDSS, though the selection is more limited than for non-KDSS models. We’ve installed lifts on many KDSS 4Runners and know which products work properly with the system. A 2- to 3-inch lift is absolutely achievable with KDSS.
What size tires fit on a lifted 4Runner?
With a 2-inch lift, 285/70R17 (33-inch) tires fit with no rubbing. A 3-inch lift opens the door to 285/75R17 or 34-inch tires. Going to 35s requires more extensive modification — body mount chops, fender trimming, and upper control arm upgrades.
How long does a 4Runner lift installation take?
A standard coilover or strut/spring lift typically takes one day. More complex installations involving upper control arm replacement, KDSS modifications, or additional components may extend to two days. We’ll give you a clear timeline before starting.
