Choosing the Right Winch Size

The general rule of thumb is that your winch should be rated at 1.5 times your vehicle’s gross weight. A JK Wrangler Unlimited with a full build can weigh 5,500 to 6,500 pounds. A JL with armor, larger axles, and 37-inch tires can push 7,000 pounds. Here’s how that translates to winch sizing:

8,000-Pound Winch: Adequate for a stock or lightly modified Wrangler that sees occasional trail use. This is the minimum we recommend for any Wrangler winch installation. At 8,000 pounds, you have enough capacity for self-recovery in moderate situations but may run out of muscle in deep mud or on steep inclines where rolling resistance multiplies the effective load.

10,000-Pound Winch: The sweet spot for most built Wranglers. A 10,000-pound winch handles the weight of a fully loaded JKU or JLU with comfortable margin. This is our most-recommended size — enough capacity for serious recovery situations without the weight and bulk of the largest winches.

12,000-Pound Winch: For heavily built Wranglers, vehicles that frequently recover others, or owners who want maximum margin. The extra capacity matters when you’re pulling through deep Florida mud where the suction effect can double the effective load on the winch.

Synthetic Rope vs. Steel Cable

This isn’t really a debate anymore — synthetic rope has won for off-road use, and here’s why:

Safety: When a steel cable breaks under load, it stores enormous energy and whips violently — a broken cable can be lethal. Synthetic rope stores less energy and drops to the ground when it breaks. For the same reason, a synthetic line doesn’t develop the sharp burrs and broken strands that make handling steel cable a hazard even during normal use.

Weight: Synthetic rope weighs roughly half what steel cable does for the same rated capacity. On a Wrangler, that weight is at the extreme front of the vehicle, affecting front spring rate and steering feel. Every pound you save on the bumper improves ride quality.

Handling: Synthetic rope is easier to unspool, easier to handle around trees and recovery points, easier to re-spool neatly, and doesn’t require the leather gloves that steel cable demands.

The trade-off is that synthetic rope requires more care — it degrades in prolonged UV exposure (a winch cover solves this), it should be rinsed after mud and saltwater exposure, and it can be damaged by sharp edges on rocks. Despite these maintenance requirements, synthetic rope is the standard for modern Wrangler builds. We install it on every winch unless a customer specifically requests steel cable.
