If you’re running 33s on a JL with the 3.6L and 8-speed automatic, 4.56 brings the RPMs right back to where Chrysler intended. For the 3.8L JK, 4.56 is even more important — that engine needs every mechanical advantage it can get.

35-Inch Tires → 4.88 Gears: The most popular regear we do. Thirty-fives are the sweet spot for lifted Wranglers, and 4.88 gears give you the grunt to turn them without hesitation. Highway RPMs stay reasonable (typically 2,200-2,400 at 70 mph on the 3.6L automatic), and off-road crawling in low range becomes noticeably more controlled.

37-Inch Tires → 5.13 Gears: When you’re running 37s, you need serious mechanical advantage. 5.13 gears are the standard recommendation, though some owners running the 3.6L with a manual transmission prefer 5.38 for even more low-end torque. On the 392 engine, 37s can get away with 4.88 since there’s enough horsepower to compensate.

40-Inch Tires and Larger → 5.38 or 5.71 Gears: Full-send territory. At this point you’re likely running aftermarket axles (Dana 44 or 60), and gear selection becomes part of a complete drivetrain build. We’ll spec the ratio based on your engine, transmission, transfer case, and intended use.

Dana 30, Dana 35, and Dana 44 Axles

Every Wrangler generation uses different axle combinations, and each has its own considerations for regearing:

Dana 30 Front (JK and JL): The standard front axle across most Wrangler models. It handles regearing well up to 4.88 ratios. For 5.13 and above, ring gear bolt strength becomes a consideration, and we recommend upgraded hardware. The JL Dana 30 (technically the Dana 186 or “M186”) is a slightly different design than the JK version — we have the tooling and experience for both.

Dana 35 Rear (JK Sport/Sahara): The Dana 35 rear on base JK models is the weak link. While we can regear a Dana 35, we’ll be upfront with you: if you’re running 35-inch tires or larger, the Dana 35 is living on borrowed time. We often recommend a Dana 44 swap at the same time as regearing — it’s more investment upfront but saves you from a trail-side axle failure later.

Dana 44 Rear (JK Rubicon, JL): The Dana 44 is a robust axle that handles big tires and aggressive gear ratios without complaint. JK Rubicons came with Dana 44s front and rear. All JL models (starting 2018) got the Dana 44 rear as standard. This is the axle we love to work on — plenty of gear options, strong ring gear, and a well-proven design.

What a Regear Involves

Regearing is precision work. It’s not a bolt-on — it requires measuring and setting gear mesh patterns, backlash, bearing preload, and pinion depth to thousandths of an inch. Here’s our process:

We disassemble both axles, inspect the carriers, bearings, and housings for wear or damage. New ring and pinion gear sets go in with new bearings (we never reuse bearings during a regear). We set pinion depth using a depth gauge, adjust backlash to spec (typically .006-.010″), and verify the contact pattern with gear marking compound. Each axle gets filled with quality gear oil — we use Royal Purple or equivalent — and the vehicle gets a test drive to confirm smooth, quiet operation.

Both axles are always regeared together. Running mismatched ratios front-to-rear will destroy your transfer case. No exceptions.
