Suspension Types Explained

Understanding your vehicle’s suspension type is essential for choosing the right lift kit and maintenance approach. Different suspension designs have different strengths, limitations, and modification requirements. Solid Axle (Live Axle)

A solid axle connects both wheels with a rigid housing — when one wheel moves, the other is affected. Found on: Jeep Wrangler (front and rear), Ford Super Duty (front), older trucks (rear), and the Ford Bronco Raptor (rear). Advantages: maximum wheel articulation, simpler lifting, extremely durable, maintains consistent camber under suspension travel. Disadvantages: heavier unsprung weight, more feedback from road imperfections, susceptible to death wobble. Solid axles are the gold standard for serious off-road use because of their articulation and durability.

Independent Front Suspension (IFS)

IFS allows each front wheel to move independently using upper and lower control arms with a coil-over or torsion-bar spring. Found on: Toyota Tacoma, Toyota 4Runner, Ford F-150, Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra, RAM 1500, Ford Ranger, Chevy Colorado, Nissan Frontier, Toyota Tundra. Advantages: better on-road ride quality, reduced unsprung weight, more precise steering. Disadvantages: less wheel articulation than solid axle, CV axle angle limitations restrict maximum lift height, camber changes under suspension travel. IFS trucks can be lifted effectively but have more constraints than solid-axle vehicles.

Coil Spring vs. Leaf Spring

Coil springs provide better ride quality and more articulation. Leaf springs carry heavier loads and are simpler but ride rougher. Many trucks use coil springs in front and leaf springs in the rear — a compromise that provides good ride quality with strong load-carrying capability. Leaf-sprung rears are lifted using add-a-leaf packs, replacement leaf packs, or shackle lifts. Coil-sprung rears (like the Jeep Wrangler and RAM 1500) are lifted with replacement coil springs or spacers.

Torsion Bar

Some trucks (older GM models, some Nissan Frontier models) use torsion bars rather than coil springs for the front suspension. Lifting air-suspension vehicles requires special considerations — some aftermarket kits work with the air system, while others require disabling it and converting to conventional springs.
