Strengths: Superior ride quality — coil springs provide a more progressive, controlled spring rate that absorbs bumps more smoothly than leaf springs. Greater articulation — coil springs allow more suspension travel because they don’t bind at extreme angles the way multi-leaf packs can. Better response to lift modifications — coil springs can be swapped for taller, differently rated springs that are specifically tuned for the desired lift height and load. Separate from axle location — coil springs only support weight; separate control arms handle axle location, allowing each function to be optimized independently.
Considerations: No inherent axle location — coil spring suspensions require separate control arms and track bars to locate the axle, adding complexity. Limited load capacity compared to heavy-duty leaf springs. Additional components (control arms, track bar) add potential failure points.
Leaf Springs: Load Capacity and Simplicity
Leaf springs are layered steel strips that flex under load. They’re found on the rear suspension of most trucks (Tacoma, F-150, Silverado, Tundra, Colorado, Frontier, etc.) and on both axles of some heavy-duty vehicles.
Strengths: Dual function — leaf springs provide both weight support AND axle location. They resist fore-aft and lateral axle movement without needing separate control arms. Higher load capacity — multi-leaf packs can handle substantial payload and towing loads. Simplicity — fewer components mean fewer potential failure points. Lower replacement cost. Good resistance to axle wrap under power (important for towing and acceleration).
Considerations: Harsher ride quality — the inter-leaf friction and progressive rate of leaf packs creates a firmer, less compliant ride over small bumps. Less articulation — leaf springs resist twisting, which limits how much one side can compress while the other extends. This reduces off-road wheel contact. More complex to modify — achieving a precise lift height with leaf springs requires either adding leaves, replacing the pack, or using blocks, each with trade-offs. Sagging over time — leaf springs lose arch with age and load, requiring eventual replacement or supplementation.

Can I convert my truck from leaf springs to coil springs?
It’s possible but it’s a major fabrication project — you’d need to build coil spring mounts, install control arms, add a track bar, and potentially modify the frame. For most trucks, it’s more practical and cost-effective to optimize the factory leaf spring setup with quality packs and proper lift components. Coil conversions make sense primarily for dedicated competition vehicles.
Are lift blocks bad for leaf spring trucks?
Blocks aren’t inherently bad for mild lifts (1-2 inches), but they don’t improve spring rate or travel — they just change the axle position relative to the spring. For lifts over 2 inches, we prefer upgraded spring packs that provide lift height AND appropriate spring rate. Blocks over 3 inches create too much leverage on the U-bolts and center pin.
Why does my leaf-spring truck ride rougher than my friend’s coil-spring Jeep?
Inter-leaf friction. Each leaf in the pack rubs against its neighbors as the spring flexes, creating friction that resists small movements. This makes the ride feel stiffer over small bumps. Coil springs have zero internal friction, so they respond to even minor road inputs. Some leaf packs use anti-friction pads between leaves to improve ride quality.
Do I need different shocks for coil springs vs leaf springs?
The shock type (twin tube, monotube, etc.) works with both spring types. The difference is in the shock length and mounting position, which varies by vehicle. When lifting, shock length must match the new suspension travel range regardless of spring type.
