Leveling kits (2″–2.5″): The Silverado 1500 sits nose-down from the factory to accommodate payload. For most Silverado owners who want a better look and slightly more capability without a major modification, a leveling kit is the sweet spot. Strut spacers or adjustable strut extensions are the typical method on the IFS front end.
Mid-range suspension lifts (4″–6″): This is where the Silverado really transforms. A 4-inch lift clears 33-inch to 35-inch tires easily. A 6-inch lift makes room for 35-inch to 37-inch tires and gives the truck a commanding presence. At these heights, we’re replacing or supplementing the factory struts, adding lift blocks or new leaf packs in the rear, upgrading the differential drop brackets to maintain proper CV axle angles, and often installing new upper control arms for correct ball joint geometry.
Maximum lifts (7″–8″+): For show trucks and extreme builds, lifts in this range create a massive visual impact. These require comprehensive driveline modifications — extended brake lines, relocated sway bar links, dropped differential crossmembers, and often upgraded CV axles. The higher you go, the more components need to be addressed. We approach these builds as complete systems, not just spring changes.
The Silverado’s IFS: What You Need to Know
Unlike the solid-axle F-250, the Silverado 1500 runs independent front suspension (IFS) with coilover struts. This design gives the truck excellent on-road manners, but it adds complexity to the lift process. The CV axle angles change with lift height, and if those angles get too steep, you’ll experience vibrations, premature CV wear, and potentially joint failure.
Differential drop kits address this by lowering the front differential to reduce CV angle. Upper control arm upgrades correct the ball joint angle at the new ride height. Quality lift kits — from brands like BDS, Rough Country, Fabtech, and ReadyLift — include these components because they understand the IFS geometry. Budget kits that skip these components are the ones that cause problems.
The rear axle is solid — typically a GM 10-bolt (8.5″ or 8.6″ ring gear) or an AAM 9.5″ on newer trucks. The rear is straightforward to lift with blocks (for moderate lifts) or replacement leaf spring packs (for larger lifts). We pair the rear lift with upgraded shocks to match the new travel range.
Tire Clearance and Gear Ratios
The Silverado 1500’s 6×139.7mm (6×5.5″) bolt pattern gives you access to one of the largest selections of aftermarket wheels available. Tire clearance by lift height:
A 2-inch leveling kit fits 33-inch tires. A 4-inch lift accommodates 33-inch to 35-inch tires. A 6-inch lift clears 35-inch to 37-inch tires. An 8-inch lift handles 37-inch to 40-inch tires.
With larger tires, regearing your Silverado is critical. The factory 3.23 or 3.42 gears are calibrated for stock tires. We recommend 4.56 gears for 33s, 4.88 for 35s, and 5.13 for 37-inch tires. The 5.3L V8 especially benefits from regearing — it relies on RPM for power and suffers noticeably with oversized tires on stock gears.
Trail Boss and ZR2: Already Lifted from the Factory
The Silverado Trail Boss comes with a 2-inch factory lift, Rancho monotube shocks, skid plates, and an autolocking rear differential. The ZR2 adds Multimatic DSSV dampers, front and rear electronic lockers, wider track, and 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory tires. Both are excellent starting points for further modifications.
Lifting a Trail Boss or ZR2 further — typically adding 2 more inches on top of the factory lift — opens up 35-inch tire options while building on the improved suspension these trims already have. We use kits specifically designed for these trims to maintain their factory suspension advantages.
