Coilovers vs. Traditional Shocks and Springs

The JK and JL Wrangler use a coil spring and separate shock absorber design from the factory. This is a proven, simple system, and upgrading within it — better springs, better shocks — delivers excellent results for most builds. But when you want the ultimate in adjustability and performance, coilovers combine the spring and shock into a single unit with significant advantages.

Traditional shocks: Monotube or twin-tube shocks bolt into the factory locations and work with your existing or upgraded coil springs. The Fox 2.0 Performance Series and Bilstein 5100 are the two most popular upgrades for daily-driven Wranglers. For more demanding use, the Fox 2.5 Factory Race Series with remote reservoirs offers dramatically more damping capacity — the extra oil volume means the shocks resist fade during extended off-road sessions.

Coilover conversions: A coilover replaces both the spring and shock with an integrated unit. The key advantage is ride height adjustability — you can dial in your exact preferred height by adjusting the spring preload collar. High-end coilovers like the King 2.5 with adjustable reservoirs or the Fox Factory Race 3.0 also offer compression and rebound damping adjustments, letting you tune the ride for different conditions. The investment is significantly higher than springs-and-shocks, but the performance and adjustability are in another league.

Control Arms

Control arms are the links that locate your axles relative to the frame. The Wrangler uses upper and lower control arms on both front and rear axles — eight total. Factory control arms use rubber bushings and are designed for stock ride height. When you lift a Wrangler, the control arms operate at steeper angles, which changes caster, pinion angle, and axle centering.

Adjustable control arms solve these geometry problems. By allowing you to lengthen or shorten each arm, you can precisely set caster angle (critical for highway stability), correct axle centering (pushed forward or back by the lift), and dial in pinion angles to eliminate driveline vibration.

For JK Wranglers with 2.5 inches of lift or more, we strongly recommend at minimum adjustable front lower control arms to correct caster. For 3.5 inches and above, a complete set of adjustable uppers and lowers is the right investment. JL Wranglers have slightly more forgiving geometry but still benefit from adjustable arms at higher lift heights.

Bushing material matters. Factory rubber bushings absorb vibration well but flex under load and deteriorate over time. Polyurethane bushings are stiffer and longer-lasting but transmit more road noise. Metalcloak’s Duroflex joints and similar designs offer a middle ground — they’re durable and precise while managing NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) better than hard poly.

Track Bars

The track bar is the single most important steering-feel component on a solid-axle vehicle. It’s the link that prevents the axle from shifting side-to-side under the vehicle. A worn or poorly configured track bar makes the steering feel vague, can cause a pull to one side, and — in extreme cases — initiates death wobble.

When you lift a Wrangler, the factory track bar operates at a steeper angle, which means any bump creates more lateral axle movement than the factory designed for. An adjustable track bar lets you correct this angle, and upgraded joints (either heavy-duty rubber or greaseable Johnny Joints) eliminate the play that develops in factory track bar ends.

For the front axle, we recommend replacing the factory track bar with an adjustable, heavy-duty unit on any Wrangler with 2 inches of lift or more. For the rear, the factory track bar is adequate for most builds up to 3.5 inches, after which an adjustable replacement restores proper rear axle centering.

Sway Bar Disconnects

Sway bars limit body roll — a good thing on the highway, but a limitation off-road. When you’re wheeling, you want maximum axle articulation — the ability for one wheel to drop into a hole while the other climbs a rock. The sway bar resists this movement, keeping the body flat but limiting how much each wheel can travel independently.

Sway bar disconnects let you quickly disconnect the front sway bar when you hit the trail, unlocking full articulation. Rubicon Wranglers come with electronic disconnects from the factory. For non-Rubicon JK and JL models, aftermarket quick-disconnect links (like the JKS Quicker Disconnect or TeraFlex Monster Disco) let you remove the links in seconds without tools and stash them in the Jeep until you’re back on pavement.

The difference is dramatic. A Wrangler with disconnected sway bars can gain 20-30% more wheel travel, keeping tires on the ground over obstacles that would lift a wheel with the sway bar connected.

Bump Stops and Limit Straps

Upgraded bump stops are the unsung heroes of a well-sorted suspension. Factory bump stops are hard rubber blocks designed for stock ride height. After a lift, the additional suspension travel means the axle can contact the bump stop at a much higher speed, leading to a jarring hit.
