RAM 1500 Off-Road Customization & Lift Kits in Sarasota

The RAM 1500 is a different animal than anything coming out of Detroit or Dearborn. The coil-spring rear suspension — standard since the fourth generation — gives the RAM a ride quality that leaf-spring competitors simply can’t touch, and that engineering advantage carries over to off-road performance in a big way. From the supercharged 6.2L Hellcat-powered TRX to the Rebel’s trail-tuned Bilstein setup to the Classic’s solid-axle durability, there’s a RAM 1500 build for every kind of off-road driver. At Godspeed Off-Road in Sarasota, we’ve built them all — and we know exactly where each generation shines and where it needs help.

RAM 1500 Lift Kits

The RAM 1500 comes in two fundamentally different front-end configurations, and mixing them up is a mistake no experienced shop makes. The 4th generation (2009-2018, including the “Classic” that ran alongside the 5th gen through 2024) uses a solid front axle — strong, simple, and easy to lift with radius arm drop brackets and coil spacers. The 5th generation (2019+) switched to independent front suspension, which demands completely different lift hardware with proper CV angle management and aluminum control arm upgrades.

We install kits from BDS, Rough Country, Superlift, and Zone Offroad that are built specifically for your generation of RAM. Every lift gets a full alignment, driveline angle inspection, and road test before it leaves our Sarasota shop. Daniel Capper, our Senior Technician with 26 years of experience, has personally installed hundreds of RAM lift kits and knows every variation these trucks throw at you.

RAM 1500 Death Wobble Fix

If you own a 4th-generation RAM 1500 (2009-2018) with four-wheel drive, you either have experienced death wobble or you will. The solid front axle with its track bar, drag link, and tie rod setup is prone to a violent, uncontrollable shimmy that typically starts between 45 and 55 mph after hitting a bump. It’s terrifying, and it’s one of the most common issues we see from RAM owners across the Tampa Bay area.

Death wobble is not caused by one single worn part — it’s a cascading failure across the entire front steering and suspension system. A shop that replaces your steering stabilizer and calls it fixed is wasting your money. At Godspeed Off-Road, we diagnose death wobble systematically: track bar bushings, ball joints, tie rod ends, drag link, unit bearings, steering stabilizer, and control arm bushings all get inspected and measured against spec. We replace what’s worn, upgrade what’s marginal, and verify the fix with a road test at highway speed.

We’ve built a reputation in Sarasota and across Southwest Florida as the shop that actually solves death wobble rather than temporarily masking it. If your RAM shakes, bring it to us before it gets worse — because it always gets worse.

RAM 1500 Leveling Kits

The RAM’s coil-spring front suspension makes leveling clean and predictable. A 2-inch front coil spacer levels the truck, opens up clearance for 33- to 35-inch tires, and preserves the RAM’s famously smooth ride. For 5th-gen owners running the optional air suspension, we use calibration-compatible spacers that let the system continue to function at all ride heights — highway, entry/exit, and off-road modes all still work as intended.

For 4th-gen Classic owners, a leveling kit is also a good opportunity to inspect and upgrade the front-end steering components that are prone to wear. We combine the two so you get a leveled truck and peace of mind on the same visit.

Wheels & Tires

The RAM’s 5-lug pattern (5×5.5 on the older generation, 6×5.5 on the newer) narrows your wheel selection compared to the GM trucks, but the right choices are still out there. Fuel, Moto Metal, and XD Series offer aggressive off-road designs in the correct bolt pattern and offset. For TRX owners, the wider factory fenders open up options for 37-inch tires on beadlock-capable wheels that look purpose-built for the platform.

Tire selection on a RAM depends heavily on whether you’re prioritizing highway ride quality — which the coil-spring suspension already excels at — or maximum off-road grip. Nitto Ridge Grapplers split the difference beautifully on this platform, while Toyo Open Country MTs are the call for dedicated trail use.

Suspension Upgrades

The RAM 1500’s coil-spring rear suspension is its secret weapon. While the competition is still running leaf packs, RAM owners get a rear end that articulates better, rides smoother, and responds more predictably to damper upgrades. Fox 2.5 coilovers in the front paired with Fox 2.0 remote reservoir shocks in the rear transform the truck’s off-road composure. For TRX owners running factory Bilstein Black Hawk e2 adaptive shocks, we offer upgraded springs and bump stops that extend usable travel without bypassing the electronic damping.

For Rebel owners, the factory Bilstein setup is a solid starting point. We build on it with Carli Suspension components — their pintop system and long-travel add-a-packs are designed specifically for the RAM platform and are some of the best-engineered aftermarket suspension parts in the industry.

Re-Gearing

RAM 1500s equipped with the 3.21 or 3.55 rear axle ratio feel sluggish once you move beyond 33-inch tires. The 5.7L Hemi makes great torque, but the 8-speed automatic needs the mechanical advantage of lower gears to put that power down efficiently with larger rubber. We typically recommend 4.56 gears for 35-inch tires and 4.88 for 37s. The TRX’s supercharged 6.2L has enough power to muscle through taller gearing, but even it benefits from a re-gear at the 37-inch-and-above level.

Re-gearing is one of our specialties at Godspeed Off-Road. We set up both axles, verify backlash and contact patterns, and break in the gears properly. A re-gear done right lasts the life of the truck.

Bumpers & Armor

RAM bumper options have exploded in recent years, especially for the 5th-gen trucks. We install full-replacement steel bumpers from Expedition One, ADD, and Bodyguard that integrate with the RAM’s parking sensors and adaptive cruise system. For Classic owners, the bumper market is even more mature — heavy-duty options from Ranch Hand and Iron Cross provide serious protection with a winch mount rated for recovery situations.

Undercarriage armor is critical for RAM trucks on Florida trails. The rear differential sits lower than the competition’s because of the coil-spring setup, so a proper diff skid plate is high on our recommendation list for any RAM owner who plans to leave pavement.

Lighting & Electrical

The RAM’s electrical system is robust and well-documented, making auxiliary lighting installations straightforward when done correctly. We run dedicated circuits from the battery through weatherproof relay boxes for every light we add — roof-mount bars, bumper pods, ditch lights, and bed lights. Rigid Industries and Baja Designs are our go-to manufacturers for output and durability. Every harness is loom-wrapped and secured to factory mounting points so nothing rattles or chafes over time.

For TRX owners, the factory hood scoop and wide-body fenders create unique mounting opportunities for forward-facing lights that sit inside the bodywork rather than on top of it. We take advantage of that to keep the TRX’s aggressive factory lines intact.

Custom Fabrication

The RAM platform rewards creative fabrication work. The RamBox storage system, the multifunction tailgate, and the coil-spring rear end all create opportunities for custom solutions that wouldn’t work on a leaf-spring truck. We build on-board air systems tucked into the RamBox compartments, dual-battery setups that leverage the RAM’s generous engine bay, and custom bed-rack systems that work around the multifunction tailgate rather than eliminating it.

For TRX builds, we fabricate chase-truck setups, prerunner bumpers, and long-travel skid plates that match the performance these trucks are capable of delivering. You don’t put 702 horsepower under the hood to stay on the pavement.

Why Godspeed Off-Road for Your RAM

RAM trucks have a loyal following, and the owners who drive them know their trucks inside and out. They deserve a shop that knows them just as well. Godspeed Off-Road has been Sarasota’s dedicated off-road build shop for over 11 years, and our experience with the RAM platform spans every generation from the solid-axle Classic to the supercharged TRX. We’ve fixed more death wobble cases than we can count, built Rebels that eat trails for breakfast, and turned stock Big Horns into trucks that look like they rolled off a SEMA stage.

Our Senior Technician Daniel Capper brings 26 years of hands-on automotive experience to every RAM build. Whether it’s a death wobble diagnosis, a lift kit installation, or a ground-up custom build, the attention to detail is the same.

RAM 1500 FAQ

How much does it cost to lift a RAM 1500?

A leveling kit is typically a $400–$800 investment installed. A 4–6 inch suspension lift runs $2,500–$5,500 installed depending on components. Air-suspension equipped trucks require additional parts and labor for proper integration.

Can you lift a RAM 1500 with air suspension?

Yes. The RAM 1500 air suspension system requires a specific approach — we use air suspension spacers and calibration to maintain the factory ride modes while adding lift height. It’s more involved than a coil-spring truck, which is exactly why you want a shop that’s done it before.

What size tires fit a lifted RAM 1500?

A 2-inch level clears 33s on most trims. A 4-inch lift fits 35s comfortably, and 6 inches opens up 37s with proper wheel offset. We recommend re-gearing to 4.56 for 33s, 4.88 for 35s, and 5.13 for 37s.

Does lifting a RAM 1500 require re-gearing?

If you’re moving to 35-inch tires or larger, re-gearing restores the throttle response and highway manners the HEMI was designed to deliver. We typically install 4.88 gears for 35s.

What’s the best lift kit brand for a RAM 1500?

We install BDS Suspension, Rough Country, Fabtech, ReadyLIFT, and Fox for RAM 1500 applications. The right kit depends on your generation (Classic vs. DT), whether you have air suspension, and your target tire size.
