Toyota 4Runner Lift Kits & Overland Builds — Sarasota, FL

The 4Runner has earned its reputation as one of the most dependable off-road SUVs ever made. Toyota’s body-on-frame platform, full-time or part-time 4WD, and a 4.0L V6 that just won’t quit have made the 4Runner the go-to for everyone from weekend trail runners to serious overlanders building rigs for cross-country expeditions. At Godspeed Off-Road in Sarasota, the 4Runner is one of the platforms we see most. We understand the Toyota IFS front end, the solid rear axle, and exactly how to get the most travel and capability without sacrificing the legendary reliability that drew you to the platform in the first place.

4Runner Lift Kits & Suspension

The 4Runner’s independent front suspension with upper and lower control arms paired with a solid rear axle requires a lift approach that respects the IFS geometry while unlocking more ground clearance. Getting CV angles, ball joint loads, and shock travel right is critical — a cheap spacer lift might get the height, but it comes with accelerated wear, poor ride quality, and a 4Runner that wanders at highway speed. We install purpose-built kits that address the whole system.

2 – 2.5 Inch Lift

The most popular range for daily-driven 4Runners. A quality 2.5-inch lift with Icon, Bilstein, or Old Man Emu coilovers clears 33-inch tires and improves both approach angle and overall stance. Paired with a rear spring or spacer that matches the front, the 4Runner sits level and rides better than stock. This range doesn’t require upper control arm replacement, though we recommend upgrading to SPC or Icon delta-joint UCAs for improved alignment adjustability and longevity.

3 – 3.5 Inch Lift

This is the sweet spot for 4Runner owners who want 34-inch tires and genuine off-road clearance. At this height, aftermarket upper control arms become necessary to keep ball joint angles within spec and unlock the full suspension travel your new coilovers are designed to deliver. Icon Stage 4 and above, or Old Man Emu BP-51 kits, are our primary recommendations at this lift height. The ride quality from a properly set up 3-inch lifted 4Runner with quality components rivals or beats the factory setup.

Re-Gearing Your 4Runner

The 4Runner’s 4.0L V6 makes 270 horsepower, and that’s plenty for a stock truck on stock tires. Add 33-inch or larger tires and the math changes. The engine has to spin those bigger, heavier tires through the same gear ratios that were calibrated for 31.5-inch factory rubber. The result is sluggish acceleration, a 5-speed automatic that hunts between 4th and 5th, and fuel economy that drops 2–3 MPG.

Gear Ratio Recommendations

33-inch tires: 4.56 gears restore the acceleration and shift points to where they belong. This is the most common re-gear for mildly lifted 4Runners.

35-inch tires: 4.88 gears. At this tire size, the investment is essential. The 4Runner transforms from feeling sluggish to feeling like it has more power than stock.

37-inch tires: 5.13 gears. Few 4Runners run 37s, but for those that do, proper gearing is non-negotiable.

The 5th-gen 4Runner uses an 8-inch front differential and an 8.2-inch rear. We set up every gear swap with new bearings, seals, and verified contact patterns. Learn more about re-gearing →

Wheels, Tires & Armor

The 4Runner runs a 6×5.5 bolt pattern, giving you access to the same deep wheel catalog as the Tacoma. SCS Ray 10, Method 701, and Relations Race Wheels are among the most popular on the 4Runner platform. Tire sizing for the 4Runner mirrors the Tacoma: 285/70R17 (33 inches) is the sweet spot for a mildly lifted truck, and 285/75R17 (34 inches) is achievable with a 3-inch lift and some trimming.

For armor, we install full skid plate systems from RCI Metalworks, C4 Fabrication, and CBI that protect the engine, transmission, and transfer case. Rock sliders are especially important on the 4Runner — the body sits lower than a Tacoma, and the factory rocker panels will not survive contact with rocks or stumps. We weld or bolt on sliders from C4, White Knuckle Off Road, and CBI depending on the build.

Overlanding & Expedition Builds

The 4Runner may be the single most popular overlanding platform in North America, and for good reason. Bulletproof reliability, a frame that can handle a loaded rooftop tent and a full cargo area, factory crawl control on TRD Pro models, and Toyota’s legendary parts availability make it the truck you’d choose if you were driving across Patagonia and needed to find parts in a small town. We build 4Runner overlanding rigs with Prinsu and Front Runner roof racks, rooftop tents from iKamper and Roofnest, dual-battery systems with DC-to-DC chargers, ARB onboard air, and modular drawer systems that turn the cargo area into an organized basecamp.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a Toyota 4Runner lift kit cost in Sarasota?

A quality 4Runner lift ranges from $1,200 for a leveling kit to $5,000+ for a full Icon or OME suspension system with remote-reservoir shocks and aftermarket upper control arms. We present tiered options so you can match the investment to your goals.

What size tires fit a 4Runner with a 3-inch lift?

285/70R17 (33-inch) tires fit cleanly. 285/75R17 (34-inch) may require minor fender liner trimming. 35-inch tires at 3 inches of lift need more aggressive modification. We test-fit every setup.

What is the best lift kit brand for the 4Runner?

Icon Vehicle Dynamics is the gold standard. Their staged kits from entry-level coilovers to full remote-reservoir systems cover every build level. Old Man Emu BP-51, Bilstein 5100, and Dobinsons are also excellent choices we install regularly. The right answer depends on your intended use and budget.

Does the 4Runner need re-gearing with bigger tires?

With 33s, the 4Runner’s 4.0L V6 and factory 3.73 gears are acceptable but noticeably weaker. 4.56 gears restore the powerband. At 35 inches, 4.88 gears are strongly recommended. More on re-gearing →

Can you build a 4Runner for overlanding?

The 4Runner is one of the most popular overlanding platforms in North America. We build them with roof racks, rooftop tents, dual-battery systems, onboard air, drawer systems, and long-range fuel solutions. Toyota’s reliability and parts availability make it ideal for remote travel.
