Best for: 33″ tire builds on trucks with factory ratios between 3.21 and 3.73. Vehicles that tow or haul regularly with 33s. Daily drivers where fuel economy matters. Builds where 33s are the final tire size — no plans to go to 35s.
How it feels: With 33″ tires, 4.56 gears make the truck feel like it did with stock tires. Acceleration is responsive, the transmission shifts at appropriate RPMs, and highway cruising RPMs are comfortable. Towing feels confident rather than strained. A professional regear with quality ring and pinion gears, new bearings, and proper setup typically runs $1,200-$2,500 per axle depending on the vehicle. Both axles should be regeared simultaneously to maintain matching ratios. The investment protects your transmission and improves drivability immediately.
Do I need to regear both axles?
Yes — both front and rear axles must have matching gear ratios. Mismatched ratios cause binding in 4WD, which damages the transfer case and axle components. If you only have one axle that needs new gears (like after a Dana 44 swap), the new gears need to match the existing axle.
Can I just get 4.88 gears now and run 33s until I upgrade to 35s?
